The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 highlights the vital role of developing reading habits from an early age, recognizing it as key to enhancing cognitive skills, language development, and critical thinking. In alignment with this vision, National Reading Day will be observed on 19th June 2025 to honour the legacy of Shri P.N. Panicker. This year marks the 30th edition of National Reading Day and also launches the month-long celebration of Reading Month, which will run from 19th June to 18th July 2025.
Suggested Activities for 30th Reading Day & Month Celebrations
19th June – 18th July 2025
- Start Reading Day on 19th June with a reading pledge during the school assembly. (If the school reopens in July, take the pledge in the first week.)
- Hold quiz competitions online or offline to make reading fun for students.
- Organize drawing and painting contests for small children in pre-primary and primary classes.
- Use art activities to help students enjoy and learn more about reading.
- Plan a special event to begin the celebrations and invite important guests.
- Arrange reading rallies or Padha Yatras with students.
- Hold seminars or workshops with the topic “Reading for Development.”
- Set up book exhibitions in schools with a variety of books.
- Invite authors to schools for debates or talks with students.
- Create a P.N. Panicker Reading Corner in school libraries with about 50 books.
- Organize awareness programs to talk about the dangers of alcohol and drug use.
- Conduct a ‘Read and Grow’ run with students to spread the message of reading.
- Let students write and perform street plays on real-life topics.
- Make small groups where students can talk about the books they have read.
- Arrange talks with writers and cultural leaders about current topics.
- Build Knowledge Centres in schools to help students learn better.
- Run classes to teach students about business and starting something new.
- Hold word games and vocabulary competitions in English and local languages.
- Provide short training programs to teach useful skills.
- Conduct poetry recitation contests to build speaking confidence and love for poems.
