Art education in CBSE plays a vital role in the curriculum. It aims to nurture students' creativity, imagination, and ability to express themselves. Additionally, it enhances their critical thinking skills and fosters an appreciation for art and cultural heritage.
Art education is a mandatory part of the curriculum for all CBSE students up to Class X. In Classes XI and XII, it is offered as an elective subject.

Art-Integrated Project Work: Guidelines
- Every student in Classes IX and X must complete at least one Art-Integrated Project in each subject. These projects will be counted as part of internal assessment under subject enrichment activities.
- Students in Classes I to VIII should also be encouraged to do at least one Art-Integrated Project each academic year. These projects can be connected to more than one subject and can be included in internal assessment for those subjects.
- Students should use any Indian art form—visual or performing—in their projects. This makes the topic easier to understand and helps them connect with their culture. Teachers should help students learn about the chosen art form and guide them to use it creatively in the project.
- For Classes I to X, at least one project must include an art form from the paired State or Union Territory.
- Subject teachers and art teachers should plan and discuss the projects at the start of the academic year. This will help them give proper guidance to the students.
- Projects should be done in groups of 4 to 5 students.
- The way the projects are assessed should match the age level of the students. Teachers and students can work together to create assessment criteria and rubrics. Students must be told the assessment criteria and maximum marks before starting the project.
- The Art-Integrated Project will also help assess the student’s involvement in art activities and how well they have met learning goals for the subject.
- Schools should make a project calendar with dates and months for when students will do their projects. Records of project assessments should be properly kept in school.
- For Class X, the marks given for these projects as part of subject enrichment will be collected by the CBSE Board when internal assessment marks are uploaded.
