Onscreen Marking (OSM) for CBSE Class 12 Examinations – Official Circular & Guidelines

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken another significant step towards digital transformation by introducing Online Marking (On-Screen Evaluation) for the Class XII Board Examinations 2026. This initiative aims to enhance transparency, accuracy, efficiency, and timely declaration of results while reducing manual workload and paper handling.

As per the latest CBSE circular, the online marking system will be implemented for selected subjects, where evaluators will assess scanned answer scripts through a secure digital platform instead of traditional physical answer books.

How Online Marking Works

Under the online marking system:

  • Answer books are digitally scanned at designated scanning centers
  • Evaluators log in to the CBSE Online Evaluation Portal using secure credentials
  • Answers are evaluated on-screen, with provision for awarding step-wise marks
  • The system supports quality checks, monitoring, and moderation
  • Marks are automatically consolidated, reducing manual errors

Key Benefits of On-Screen Marking (OSM)

CBSE has highlighted multiple advantages of adopting the On-Screen Marking system:

  • Error-Free Mark Calculation: Automatic totaling ensures accuracy and completely avoids manual addition mistakes.
  • Minimal Human Handling: Digitized workflows reduce manual coordination and simplify the evaluation process.
  • Speedy Assessment Process: Online evaluation allows faster completion with wider teacher participation.
  • Efficient Use of Time and Resources: Eliminates the need for physical movement of answer scripts, saving cost and time.
  • Evaluator-Friendly System: Teachers can assess answer scripts from their own schools without disrupting routine academic work.
  • No Requirement for Post-Result Rechecking: Secure digital records make post-result mark verification unnecessary.
  • Optimized Workforce Utilization: Reduced dependence on additional staff for verification and monitoring.
  • Inclusive Evaluation Framework: Enables participation of teachers from all CBSE-affiliated schools worldwide.
  • Eco-Friendly Approach: Digital assessment significantly cuts down paper usage and supports environmental conservation.
